China Pictures - The Jianshui City was originally an earthen
The Jianshui City was originally an earthen city constructed in the Nanzhao reign, and expanded to a brick city in the 20th year (1387) of the Hongwu reign in the Ming Dynasty. When Li Dingguo took Lin'an City by storm, the south, north and west city gate towers were destructed in wars. They were restored in the fourth year of the Kangxi reign, but were damaged again later. Only the Chaoyang Gate Town at the east gate still stands there intact after several wars and earthquakes, and has a history of 600 years. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡,China Pictures; In the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), Jianshui Prefecture was established, and the Ming Dynasty kept the institution without any change. In the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty Jianshui Prefecture was renamed Jianshui County. In the first year of the Republic of China (1911) it was given the name Lin'an County, and was changed back to Jianshui County again the next year. The Qing court set up four academies, namely Chongzheng, Huanwen, Chongwen and Qujiang, in succession in Jianshui. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡In 1994, Jianshui was proclaimed by the State Council as one of the third-grade historical and cultural cities in China.

Shanghai Travel - The Ya'erhu Ancient City is located
The Ya'erhu Ancient City is located in the Ya'er Lake Town, about 10 kilometers to the west of Turban City in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Cross-embraced by two ancient riverbeds, the city got its name of cross-river city. The city was a prefecture of the Gaochang State during the Sixteen States (304-439) and the Northern Dynasty (960-1279) periods, and a county of the Gaochang Prefecture after the 14th year (640) of the Zhenguan reign in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and then declined. The present site of the city was built in the Tang Dynasty and the following dynasties. ¡¡¡¡ ¡,Shanghai Travel;¡¡¡Leaning on earth cliff, the city had a rectangular shape, without city walls. It was 1,China Pictures,000 meters long from south to north with the widest point about 300 meters from east to west. A gate was open in the east and south walls each. The most distinct feature of its construction style was that most constructions including the streets were built with the immature soil. Caves were dug out directly from the immature soil, while single-storeyed houses were built with immature soil walls and a wooden roof. Judged from pole holes left on the walls, some of the buildings were multi-storeyed houses. The lower floor was immature soil or arch-roof cave, while the upper floor walls were built with earth stamped between board frames to uphold the wooden structure. Most roofs were covered with mud and seldom with tiles.

Shanghai Travel - Standing by the Qiantang River in Hangzhou
Standing by the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, the Pagoda of Six Harmonies was first constructed in 970 during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) by Qian Hongchu, King of the Wuyue State, who ruled the area of today's Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. The purpose of building the pagoda was to suppress the tidewaters. It had nine storeys and was some 150 meters high. At night lanterns were lit on the pagoda so that ships and boats on the Qiantang River could use it as a navigation tower. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡The pagoda suffered repeated damages over about a thousand years. It was almost completely destroyed by war in 1121. Reconstruction started in 1153 and was completed in 1163. The height of the pagoda was reduced after reconstruction because there were only seven storeys left of the original nine. Major repairs were made again in 1524 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and in 1735 and 1900 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but these repairs were on the outside eaves only. The brick body of the pagoda remained the same as in the Song Dynasty. Today some Song Dynasty inscriptions can still be found inside the pagoda. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡,Shanghai Travel;¡The extant pagoda is octagonal, with thirteen levels on the exterior but seven levels on the interior. It stands 59.89 meters high, and is one of the tallest pagodas in southern China. The pagoda can be divided into four parts from the exterior to the interior, namely, the outer wall, the zigzag corridor, the inside wall and the little chamber. The corridor in-between connects the exterior with the interior; the winding staircases, linking the corridor parts, lead to the top level. The exterior wall, with a thickness of 4.12 meters, has doors in the four sides. On the two side walls of the entrance connecting the exterior with the interior, there are engraved shrines. The four sides of the interior wall, with a thickness of 4.2 meters, also have doors. In the center of the pagoda is the little chamber which was originally used to place Buddhist Statues. Each storey has a square room, with ceiling supported by brackets. ¡¡¡¡,China Pictures; ¡¡¡¡In the pagoda there are more than two hundred sites of brick carvings, which feature a wide range of motifs, including megranate, lotus, phoenix, peacock, parrot, lion, kylin and so on. These brick carvings are rare material proofs of Chinese ancient architectures. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡The Six Harmonies Pagoda, as a state-level cultural site, has been under the state protection since 1961. It is one of the famous scenic spots in Hangzhou City. Commanding a spectacular view of the surging Qiantang River, the pagoda presents a quiet image of age-old majesty. Looking out from the top of the pagoda, sightseers can see as far as the misty horizon, enjoying the unforgettable, breathtaking scenery..
